I want a tattoo
How can I get a Human Rights Tattoo?
Short answer: the only way is to visit one of our events held around the world!
Long answer: the only way is to visit one of our events held around the world. We must inform you in advance that we can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to acquire a tattoo. We have a limited amount of tattoos available per event and work with a first come first serve principle. So if you’re determined to not go home without a Human Rights Tattoo, make sure to get to the event in time.
So, I’m at a tattoo event. Then what?
Upon arriving at one of our events you’ll receive a registration card with a letter on it. When the tattoo is yours and under your skin, we’ll take a picture of you and a closeup picture of your tattoo. These photos will be published on our website together with your written statement (in English). Please think carefully about your statement in advance. We’d love to read personal statements that provide insight into your life and your personal views on human rights. All tattoos and statements will be added to our website.
Can I choose which letter I want?
No you can’t. You’ll be given one by us. You can however select the font and choose where you want the letter to be tattooed on your body.
How many people can get a tattoo per event?
Tattooing a single Human Rights Tattoo takes about 15 minutes. So with two tattoo artists per event we can do approximately 8 letters in one hour. Depending on the duration of the specific event this can result in 50 to 80 tattoos a day. Because of the limited number of tattoos on each day, we are always fully booked.
How old do I have to be to get a tattoo?
We only tattoo people ages 18 and up.
Can I get my Human Rights Tattoo for free?
No, Human Rights Tattoo are not for free. We work with a pay as you please principle in order to make our project accessible for everyone, no matter their background or budget. To give you an idea of the costs per tattoo: materials cost approximately €4,50. In a regular tattoo shop, tattoos similar to ours in size will cost you about €50 each.
Sounds fair. But, what do you do with my money?
100% of the money will be donated to the Human Rights Tattoo Foundation, which helps fund more Human Rights Tattoo events in communities around the world. Especially places that don’t have the financial resources to host an event. This provides us with the opportunity to tattoo people from all over the world and all walks of life.
Why can’t I just go to my local tattoo shop and get a letter?
Our events are a way of actually building our community by meeting the people who share the same moral beliefs and goals. Human Rights Tattoo is a community art project, not an online service.
Can you come to my city or country?
We want to enlarge the Human Rights Tattoo community all over the world. So we’re keen on visiting countries and places we haven’t been yet! And especially keen on visiting places where human rights are being violated. In order to organize upcoming tattoo events we’re always looking for hosts and partners. So please get involved if you think we should come to you!
When is the next Human Rights Tattoo event?
All upcoming events, as well as our expositions, seminars, lectures and meet-ups, are listed on our calendar. If there are no events visible we’re working hard to organize new ones. Sign up for our newsletter to receive a monthly update!
Can I make a donation without getting a tattoo?
Yes you can. We call it painless support. We are more than grateful to receive your donation.
