A genuine prison-style Human Rights Tattoo
Writing letters is Amnesty’s most tried and tested method of action. For decades, we have been banging on the doors of those in power with sacks full of letters. This is how we let them know that injustice must stop NOW. And that the people we are campaigning for must be released.
Every year, Amnesty International Netherlands organises a letter-writing marathon around Human Rights Day on 10 December. This year, it will take place on 29 November, Schrijf je Vrij (Write for Freedom). This event offers a unique 10-hour prison experience, drawing attention to human rights.
Upon arrival, you hand in your belongings, receive a special T-shirt and have your mugshot taken. After an introduction about the people you are campaigning for, you spend part of the time in a cell with two or three other participants. There will also be writing in a communal area.
During this event, you will write as many letters as possible for human rights defenders and, in the run-up to 29 November, you will raise as much money as possible for Amnesty’s work (minimum €250). You can participate individually or as a team.
The programme is inspiring and impactful, with time to get some fresh air, and lunch, dinner, coffee and tea will be provided.
During this edition of Write for Freedom, Human Rights Tattoo will be present in the prison. A small number of participants in Schrijf je Vrij will have the chance to get a real Human Rights prison tattoo.
Would you like to be eligible for this? Then keep an eye on the Amnesty website https://schrijfjevrij.inactievooramnesty.nl/. We will share more information later this month.
Please note: these are real tattoos. A tattoo consists of one letter and is only a few centimetres in size.
All registrations are done via the Schrijf je Vrij website.
